Standing resolutely on the edge of the roaring Arabian Sea at Prabhas Patan, Shri Somnath is celebrated as the First (Prathama) among the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas, revered across millenniums as the eternal symbol of civilizational resilience and indestructible faith.
Known affectionately as the Shrine Eternal, Shri Somnath Jyotirlinga possesses a history of miraculous spiritual resilience unmatched anywhere on earth. Mentioned in the Rigveda and the Mahabharata, the original temple was built in gold by the Moon God (Soma), in silver by Ravana, in sandalwood by Lord Krishna, and in stone by King Bhimdev of Gujarat. Over the centuries, the wealthy sanctuary was invaded, looted, and demolished repeatedly by foreign conquerors—including Mahmud of Ghazni, Alauddin Khilji, and Aurangzeb.
Yet, each time it was razed to the ground, the devout people of India rebuilt it from its ashes, proving that physical stone can be broken, but spiritual faith cannot be conquered. On Diwali day in 1947, India’s Iron Man, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, stood before the ruins by the Arabian Sea and made a historic national pledge to restore Somnath to its ancient glory. Under the visionary leadership of K.M. Munshi and temple architect Prabhashankar Sompura, the grand temple was reconstructed in the classic Kailash Mahameru Prasad style. On 11 May 1951, the first President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, performed the ceremonial Pran Pratishtha, declaring that the power of reconstruction is always infinitely greater than the power of destruction.
According to the Shiva Purana, Chandra Dev (the Moon God) married all twenty-seven daughters of Daksha Prajapati (the Nakshatras), but lavished all his affection exclusively upon Rohini. Grieved by their neglect, the other sisters complained to their father. In anger, Prajapati Daksha cursed Chandra to wane away and lose all his radiant celestial lustre to consumption (Kshaya Rog).
As the universe fell into darkness, Chandra came to the holy confluence of Prabhas Patan and worshipped Lord Shiva through intense tapasya for four thousand years. Pleased by his unswerving penance, Lord Shiva granted him redemption: while Daksha’s curse could not be entirely erased, Chandra would now wane for fifteen days (Krishna Paksha) and wax back to full radiance for fifteen days (Shukla Paksha). Lord Shiva then placed the Moon upon His own matted locks as an ornament and agreed to dwell permanently at Prabhas Patan as Somnath (Lord of the Moon).
The Dvadasa Jyotirlinga Stotram reverently begins with Somnath as the foremost Jyotirlinga: "Saurashtradeshe Vishade-tibramye Jyotirmayam Chandrakalavatamsam | Bhaktipradanaya Kripavatirnam Tam Somanaatham Sharanam Prapadye ||"
