According to ancient Pauranik lore, when Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu engaged in a debate over cosmic supremacy, Lord Shiva manifested as an infinite, blazing pillar of celestial light (Jyotirlinga) piercing all three worlds. Vishnu traversed downward as a boar and Brahma flew upward as a swan, yet neither could fathom the boundary of the infinite pillar. Shiva manifested from the central pillar in Kashi, establishing the foundational principle that divine reality is without beginning or end.
Another sacred belief holds that whenever a mortal passes away within the sacred boundaries of Kashi, Lord Shiva Himself whispers the divine Taraka Mantra (the name of Sri Rama) into the ear of the departing soul, instantly liberating them from the cycle of rebirth. Furthermore, Goddess Parvati was so enamored by Kashi that Shiva declared it their eternal home; here, Goddess Parvati took the benign form of Mata Annapurna, dispensing nourishment to all who dwell in Kashi, ensuring that no devotee ever goes hungry.
